DESERT KIDS

A documentary by Michael Pfeifenberger
84 minutes, Hebrew, Arab, English with German subtitles

The Negev Desert not only captures visitors with its spectacular landscape, it's also a place of opposites and extremes, a home between two cultures. Nomads and tribal traditions dominate the Arabic-influenced world, while people from all corners of the globe gather in the kibbutz, forming a community which serves the state of Israel.

The answer to the question which children and young adults ask: “Who is in control of my life?” looks different in the Bedouin settlement than in the kibbutz. DESERT KIDS shows their similarities and differences and accompanies the coming of age process, which begins with the topic of love and family and ends with military service.

But both cultures are characterized by strong values, and in both worlds the young people share a feeling of confinement.
